What is facial symmetry?
Facial symmetry describes how closely corresponding points on the left and right sides of a face align around a central facial axis. This is bilateral symmetry: the eyes, brows, mouth corners, and jaw points form approximate pairs across the midline.
A human face is not a geometric shape, so it does not have perfectly mirrored halves. Small differences are normal. The useful question is how much left-right variation appears in one controlled photo—not whether a face reaches impossible perfection.
This facial symmetry analyzer measures visible landmark positions consistently. It does not diagnose anatomy, health, or the way a face looks in motion.

The correct axis
A facial axis is not the center of the photo
In math, a line of symmetry divides a shape into matching reflected halves. For a face, the closest equivalent is an estimated facial midline fitted through central landmarks around the nose and chin.
The checker compares each landmark pair with that fitted axis. It does not use the edge or center of the image, because a face can be positioned off-center while remaining straight.
Faces use approximate bilateral symmetry. The rotational symmetry, radial symmetry, shapes, and graph formulas shown for the broad word “symmetry” answer a different search intent and are not part of this test.

How accurate is an online facial symmetry test?
It can compare landmark geometry consistently in a clear, straight-on photo, but it measures the image rather than three-dimensional anatomy. Head turn, camera angle, lens perspective, lighting, and expression can all change the result.
Why does my facial symmetry score change between photos?
A close selfie can enlarge the side nearest the lens, while head tilt or a changing expression can move paired features. Retest at eye level, from a little farther away, with even light and a neutral expression.
Is facial symmetry the same as attractiveness?
No. Symmetry is one measurable feature of a photo, while attractiveness is subjective and also depends on expression, proportions, styling, culture, and personal preference. Use the separate attractiveness test for the broader photo rating.
