What a facial ratios calculator can compare

A facial ratios calculator turns visible distances into unitless proportions. Because each distance is divided by another distance from the same photo, the result can be compared across different image sizes without pretending that pixels are millimetres.

This page keeps five outputs separate: an fWHR-style value, a midface ratio, inner-eye spacing relative to face width, a facial-thirds balance score, and a facial-fifths balance score. Separate values make it easier to see which relationship changed between two photos.

The ratios describe landmark geometry in one image. They do not identify a person, diagnose anatomy, or establish an ideal face. Their most useful role is controlled comparison: same camera, same distance, same expression, and the same visible outline.

How the facial proportions are calculated

The calculator uses normalized MediaPipe landmark coordinates. It reports direct ratios where the formula is meaningful and balance scores where several distances must be summarized.

FWHR-style ratio

face width ÷ upper-face height

Width runs between cheek landmarks. Height runs from a central upper-face landmark to an upper-lip landmark. Definitions differ elsewhere, so the method is labeled.

Midface ratio

upper span ÷ lower span

The upper span runs from a central upper-face point to the nose point; the lower span runs from that point to the chin.

Eye spacing

inner-eye gap ÷ face width

Normalizing the gap by face width prevents image resolution from becoming the result.

Facial thirds

three vertical bands → balance score

The tool compares visible upper-face-to-brow, brow-to-nose, and nose-to-chin spans and summarizes their deviation from equal thirds.

Facial fifths

eye and face widths → balance score

Eye width, inner-eye spacing, and total face width are compared with the classical five-eye-width reference.

How to take a facial-ratio photo

  1. 01Use a straight-on portrait with the whole forehead, cheeks, jaw, and chin visible.
  2. 02Keep the camera at eye level, step back, and crop afterward to reduce wide-angle distortion.
  3. 03Use even light and a neutral mouth; keep hair, hands, glasses, and heavy shadows away from the landmarks.
  4. 04Retake under the same setup. Compare the individual ratios before comparing any combined score.

Interpretation boundary

There is no single ideal facial ratio

Published studies, clinical practices, artists, and online communities often use different landmarks for similarly named ratios. A value from one system may not be comparable with a value from another.

Facial proportions also vary naturally. A two-dimensional selfie does not capture depth, skeletal projection, soft tissue, or calibrated anthropometry. Use the result as a transparent photo measurement, not a prescription for how a face should look.

FWHR compares a horizontal face span with a vertical upper-face span. Definitions vary between studies and online tools, so this page labels its result an fWHR-style photo ratio and shows the exact landmarks used instead of presenting one universal ideal.

How is the midface ratio calculated?

This tool divides the distance from a central upper-face landmark to the nose landmark by the distance from that nose landmark to the chin. The value describes this two-dimensional landmark map and is most useful when you compare photos taken the same way.

What are facial thirds and facial fifths?

Facial thirds compare three vertical bands from the visible upper face to the brow, nose, and chin. Facial fifths compare eye width, inner-eye spacing, and total face width. FaceRating.me reports balance scores because a single photo cannot provide calibrated real-world measurements.

Is there an ideal facial ratio?

No single ratio defines an attractive or healthy face. Reference proportions are descriptive geometry, while real faces vary by ancestry, age, expression, camera perspective, and individual structure. Read the values separately instead of chasing one perfect number.

Why do my facial proportions change between photos?

Camera distance, lens choice, head pitch, expression, and hair covering the outline can all move detected landmarks. Use an eye-level camera, step back, keep a neutral expression, and compare only controlled retakes.

Is this facial proportions calculator medical anthropometry?

No. It measures normalized distances in one photograph. It does not use calibrated instruments, three-dimensional imaging, skeletal landmarks, or a clinical examination and must not be used for diagnosis or treatment decisions.
